Can you tell me more about the Dalai Lama
CHRIS: I've been studying him since I was a teenager and the Tibetan history. Goes back to World War II and the Japanese invasions; and then the Chinese Red Revolution; and what happened to them after the Chinese communists and Mao and various stories of the Lamas monks that had to disperse from that region. When the Chinese went in there they just started slaughtering everyone. It's a matter of record that the most colorful and successful CIA operation was getting the Dalai Lama out of Tibet – extricated from under the Chinese invasions.
BRENT: Why do you say colorful?
CHRIS: Cause it is. It's the stuff that movies are made out of. Because it had a good Intention behind it, it had to do with a colorful and real historical situation and perhaps the CIA's most successful and memorable operation.
BRENT: Why do you say good Intention?
CHRIS: Because the Dalai Lama was a symbol for good throughout the World and the Chinese would have imprisoned or even executed him.
BRENT: That was the CIA involvement
CHRIS: They went in and they got him out of Tibet when the Chinese invaded. They extricated him to safety. Andy says that the problem with the Dalai Lama is that he has political strings all over him Because of this, he owes them. His position in the World is a political show now.
BRENT: What was it before?
CHRIS: He was the religious figurehead of Tibetan Buddhism.
BRENT: I saw this photo of him as a child.
CHRIS: His story was described in a book called "The Thirteenth Dalai Lama." What happened when the twelfth had died there was a traditional mission to find his reincarnation. They look for child prospects and then bring them all in and test them through a series of tests arranged to see who is the real reincarnation of the recent Dalai Lama and this is when Tenzin Gyatso came as a child amongst a number of others, to be tested. For instance there will be a whole array of objects gold and all sorts of colorful and attractive things and among these items there will be personal objects that belonged to the deceased Dalai Lama and he (Tenzin) picked out all the stuff that belonged to him in fact he knew where all the rest of his personal stuff was while the other kids picked out stuff that didn't have anything to do with him. That's how he was chosen. His mother and his family were very unhappy because he was taken from them but they understood because that's the tradition.
